Lord, it's hard to be humble?

  • PDF

One of the biggest downfalls of coaching one's self into humility, is often the realization that you can't actually coach yourself into humility. The truth is, you have to be humbled, and being humbled is not often a pleasant experience.

The reality is that most people do not want to be humbled. People want to be confident. They don't want to walk around being insecure and/or afraid. But humility is not insecurity by any stretch, humility is actually a deep self-awareness and a different sort of confidence coupled with respect of natural authorities, such as nature, physics, meta-physcis, God and so on.

Humility is a stance. One of it's aspects could be, that it says, "I'm not better than you, and you are of value to me." Insecurity says, "I'm afraid of you, you might hurt me." Humility invites others in and draws out the value of others, whereas insecurity seeks to avoid the value and strengths of others.

To move toward humility, you must take a good hard look at yourself. Start by being honest. You don't need to purposely degrade yourself, but be real with yourself. Look in the mirror. Take a good look. No, you're not the best looking, and you're not the most stylish? Can you be at peace with that?

To embrace humility, you'll have to make peace with it.

Dwell on some of your failings, and accept them. They're there, whether you like it or not, and there's nothing you can do about virtually any of them at this point. Can you be at peace? Can you accept it?

Embracing these things creates the realization that you need others. You've always needed others, but when you embrace humility, you actually notice how much you need others to be by your side.

Humility is embracing the fact that you are weak, make mistakes, and have need, and will have need till the day that you die. Giving yourself over to this attitude, will unite you with countless people, instead of dividing you.

Modesty is a shining light; it prepares the mind to receive knowledge, and the heart for truth. --Madam Guizot
